About Me

We are Stefanie, Sabine, Evelin, Nadine, Tina and Celia, the six trainees from Switzerland Tourism. Trainees on Tour is a project launched by us to introduce the Grand Tour of Switzerland to our generation (the 20-30 year olds). In two groups we went out to discover the most beautiful places, to find exciting and fun activities, to spot top hotels and restaurants, and much much more. Stefanie, Sabine and Evelin covered the parts of western Switzerland and focused their activities on culture and culinary travel. Nadine, Tina and Celia ventured out to eastern and southern Switzerland to get off the beaten track and to be active in the region's pristine nature. Underground lake of St-Léonard

After our picnic in Varen, we drove to St-Léonard. There the subterranean lake of St-Léonard is a must see!
We parked Paul & Paula on the big parking space next to the entrance of the lake (for those discovering Switzerland by camping car, there are special camping car parking places there).

You wouldn't think that there is such a big underground lake when you see the entrance.
At the entrance you can have a drink, have a snack or buy souvenirs at the shop.
We followed the guide downstairs and immersed into a magical place! The place is quiet and you feel a fresh breeze (don't forget to take a pullover or a jacket because even if it's hot outside, the cave is chilly).

Downstairs you find little boats on which you can embark to discover the lake.
Time to embark.
All excited to discover the underground lake.
We hopped on the boat with about ten other people. The guide paddled while explaining all the things we needed to know about this cave. For example, that you can also experience a concert on the lake! The musicians play on a boat in the middle of the lake while the audience is placed in other boats in front of them. As the acoustic there is awesome and the ambiance magical, we thought "what a pity that we couldn't experience that!".

Crystal clear water.
The guide explained the origin of the cave in German, French and English.
We tried to take some pictures to share this amazing ambiance with you, but it didn't really work out because of the darkness. So you just have to trust us, hat this place is really worth to be seen.

Leaving this magical place, going back to reality.

After our trip to the underground lake, we made a stop at a cute little market stand named "Le Léonardin" just in front of the parking space. There we had the chance to try apricot beer. This delicious beer is made in a brewery in Saxonne and is 100% made in Valais.

Did you know that in Switzerland the apricots only grow in Valais because of it's climate? During the apricot period, you can find little apricot stands everywhere in Valais.
Apricot beer from the Saxonne brewery.

Here you can find  apricot beer and plenty other regional specialties. And it's practical because it's on the way to the entrance of the subterranean lake of St-Léonard.
